Mask representing the face of Kuan Yin, a Buddhist deity (originally Bodhisattava Avalokiteshvara), wearing a crown on which a stylized representation of Amithaba Buddha, sitting cross-legged in meditation posture, is incised at the center front and framed by an incised floral design. Face mask elaborately carved in the shape of a suffering face wearing an official cap. Wood, with dark-red lacquering. Strands of hemp (several are missing) were affixed with wood pegs into tiny holes under the cheeks and the chin, to suggest a moustache and a beard. China, 19th century, maybe earlier. Face mask carved in the shape of a smiling face wearing an official cap. This mask represents the face of Tudi, or Tudigong, the God of the Soil and of Cereals. Wood, with numerous superimposed layers of polychrome pigments. Chinese character on top of cap ("happiness"). Face mask carved in the shape of a smiling joker, hair arranged in a knot on top of his head, pierced through eyes, nose and mouth. Polychrome lacquered wood. China, 19th century. Height: 9 6/8" ( 24,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Chip on the right side of the hair, some erosion, otherwise very good condition. NOTE: this mask may represent Xiao Gui, a small demon character of the "Nuo" theater.
