Mask representing the face of Kuan Yin, a Buddhist deity (originally Bodhisattava Avalokiteshvara), wearing a crown on which a stylized representation of Amithaba Buddha, sitting cross-legged in meditation posture, is incised at the center front and framed by an incised floral design. Face mask representing the face of Tudi, or Tudigong, the God of the Soil and of Cereals. Wood, with superimposed layers of polychrome pigments. Strands of animal hair (several are missing) were affixed into tiny holes under the cheeks and the chin, to suggest a moustache and a beard. China, 19th century, maybe earlier. Superbly carved mask representing God Kailu, with a fierce expression, two small horns and a central one, pierced through bulging eyes, large ears and nose, open mouth showing teeth, fangs and tongue. Beautifully carved mask representing a demon, with a fierce expression, two horns, bulging eyes, open mouth showing teeth and fangs. Wood, with dark encrusted patina. China, 18th century. Height: 8 1/2" (21 cm). Obvious signs of use and great age, erosion at the back, otherwise very good condition.

Face mask carved in the shape of a smiling joker, hair arranged in a knot on top of his head, pierced through eyes, nose and mouth. Polychrome lacquered wood. China, 19th century. Height: 9 6/8" ( 24,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Chip on the right side of the hair, some erosion, otherwise very good condition.
NOTE: this mask may represent Xiao Gui, a small demon character of the "Nuo" theater.
