Trio of statues of Judges of the Underworld, sitting in formal attire. They were finely carved by the same artist. Lacquered and gilt wood, with remnants of black soot in some areas, coming from temple candles. One of the statues has kept its votive "box" closed at the back, while the other two are open. China, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Height: around 7 1/2" (19 cm). Each statue is nicely mounted on a custom wood stand. Very old statue of unknwon god, wearing formal robes and cap, sitting on a throne. Remnants of moustache and beard under nose and chin. Wood, with traces of the original gilding and painting. China, early Ming Dynasty, most probably earlier. Height: 11 1/4" (28,5 cm). Small chips in some areas, old insect infestation (no danger), otherwise good condition.

Statue of the God of Medicine, in formal robes, standing on a squarish base and flanked by his two attributes, the lion and the dragon. Rectangular hole at the back to make room for a "votive box", lid missing but some votive documents still remaining. Wood, with remnants of lacquering and gilding. China, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Height: 9 1/2" (24 cm). Hands and dragon head missing, some flaking, otherwise good condition.

Statue of a lohan (Buddhist holy man), wearing monk's robes, in sitting posture. The statue was originally resting on an independent base, now gone. Wood, with traces of polychrome pigments. A tiny glass insert was originally put on each eye, but the one to the right is now missing. Two votive boxes at the back, the larger one open (lid missing). China, Ming Dynasty. Small Buddhist altar showing Buddha, standing on a double four-legged base, backed with an aureola, his hands in "abhaya and varada mudra" posture (expression of appeasement and charity). Bronze with fine light green and red patina. China, Northern Wei Dynasty Period (386-534). Height: 3 5/8" (9,5 cm). Very good condition.

Small statue of Buddha Amithaba, in meditating posture, sitting cross-legged on a double lotus throne. Votive box at the back, its lid missing. Lacquered wood, with remnants of the original gilding. China, 18th century. Height: 3 7/16" (8,7 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom wood stand. Very good condition despite a large chip at the back. A fine little statue.

Statue of Buddha Sakyamuni, in monk's robes, his face reflecting a profound inner serenity, his hands in "bhumisparsa mudra" ("taking the Earth as a witness of the veracity of his sayings"), sitting cross-legged. Bronze, with fine green patina. China, Ming Dynasty period (1368-1644). Height: 8 6/8" (22 cm). Small casting flaws at the back and right side (see photos), otherwise very good condition.

Small statue of Buddha wearing a diadem, in a meditative posture ("dhyana mudra"), holding a stylized beggar bowl in his hands, sitting cross-legged on a double lotus throne. Bronze, with thick encrusted green patina. Tibet, 16th century. Height: 5 1/2" (14 cm). Diadem partly chipped, a few tiny casting defects, otherwise very good condition. A rather unusual aspect of the Buddha image.
