Nuo theater mask representing the smiling Tudigong, the god of the soil and of cereals in ancient Chinese mythology, wearing a formal cap. Wood, with traces of lacquer, fine dark patina. China, early 19th century, maybe older. Height: 11 1/4" (28,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Old local restorations from top to bottom, otherwise good condition.

Mask representing the smiling face of He Shang, with small forehead, long ears, large, open and pierced through eyes, flat nose, large, open and pierced through mouth, wide chin. Wood, with remnants of thin plaster and superimposed layers of paint or lacquer. China, early 19th century. Height: 8 6/8" (22,2 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Mask representing "Kaishan", wearing a cap, with a fierce expression, his open mouth showing fangs. Wood, with polychrome pigments, fine patina. China, 19th century. Height: 10 3/8" (25,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Very good condition. Note: Kaishan, "the god who opens the mountain", has been revered for centuries by primitive mountain ethnic groups in China, seeking his protection.
