Large tsampa bowl, its core made of wood, almost entirely covered with embossed silver decoration showing an intricate design of six zodiac animals (wild boar, tiger, rat, rabbit, ram and bull), surrounded with lotuses. Inside the bowl, remnants of a lacquered decor which must have originally represented a deity in clouds. Tibet, 18th century. Dimensions: diameter: 7" (17 cm), height: 1 3/8" (5,6 cm). Architectural ornament in relief representing the Hindu God Virabhadra, an avatar of Shiva, standing, wearing formal cap and "dhoti", his face showing a fierce expression underlined by the fangs protruding from his mouth, holding a sword in his left hand and a shield in his right hand. Face mask, protruding forehead, large ears, pierced through oval eyes, small nose with pierced through nostrils, open pierced through rectangular mouth. Wood, with dark encrusted patina. Remnants of small metal pieces around mouth and chin, which were meant to attach goat skin or animal hair, to represent a moustache and beard. Himalayan Region, early 19th century, probably earlier. Realistically and finely carved mask representing the face of Hanuman, the famous Monkey-god, a hero of the Ramayana, the ancient hindu epic. Wood, dark patina with traces of polychrome pigments. Himalayas, 19th century. Height: 11" (27 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of use and age, old crack on top of forehead, erosion, old accidents (chips), otherwise very good condition.

Statue of a protective deity, squatting on a rounded base, hands in praying posture. Wood, brownish patina. Himalayan Region, early 19th century, probably earlier. Height: 13 1/4" (33 cm). Obvious signs of great age, erosion, age cracks, otherwise good condition. Note: this statue was located in a house, to ward off evil spirits. NOTE: this statue is part of several pieces which were collected in the Himalayan Region from 1974 to 1979.
