Beautifully carved and decorated statue of Nichiren-shonin, the founder of the Nichiren sect of Zen Buddhism. The Master is in monk's robes, his left hand holding a "sutra" roll while his right hand is in didactic posture. The Master is sitting cross-legged on an elevated and lavishly decorated throne. The Master statue itself is decorated with an intricate polychrome painting and his eyes are made of glass. Small altar containing a statue of Buddha in meditation posture ("dhyana mudra"), sitting cross-legged on an elevated lotus throne with a mandorla at the back. Lacquered and gilt wood, the doors of the altar with brass hinges and decoration. Japan, 19th century. Height: 7 1/2" (19 cm). Some flaking on the front and back bottom of the altar, otherwise good condition.
