Unusual hermaphrodite figurine, in standing posture, typical Pende style head, large and long neck with a goitre, narrow shoulders, small breasts, arms alongside narrow torso but hands not touching hips, small male genitalia, bent legs resting on stylized feet. A small fabric belt is tied around the hips. Wood, brown glossy patina, except for the area around the eyes that has been kept clear. Small bowl, ceramic, with beige stylized painted floral design on dark-brown underglaze, often called "tenmoku" for its use in the Japanese tea ceremony. China, Jizhou, Song Dynasty (960~1279 A.D.). Dimensions: height: 1 13/16" (4,7 cm), diameter: 4 1/2" (11,5 cm). One tiny chip at rim, otherwise very good condition.

Standing female figurine, highly stylized face, geometric large ears, narrow shoulders, protruding breasts, arms alongside long torso, slightly bent legs resting on small feet. Wood, with light-brown glossy patina. Africa, Burkina Faso, Bobo Fing Peoples. Height: 9 1/4" (23,5 cm). Erosion all over, left hand and feet chipped, age cracks, otherwise good condition. Divination implement, called "katatora", an abstract figure with open rectangular element on rounded base surmounted by a stylized head with carved facial features and backswept coiffure.
