Statue of a lohan (or "arhat" in sanscript), one of the 16 or 18 disciples of Buddha, in monk's robes, sitting cross-legged, hands joined, his face reflecting a profound inner serenity. Lacquered and partly gilt wood. The statue was carved in two wood parts, one to represent the head, torso and back, the other to represent the legs and hands. China, Qing Dynasty, 18th century. Small head of Buddha, its face reflecting a profound inner serenity. Stucco, with numerous soil encrustations. Pakistan, Gandhara Region, Graeco-Buddhist art, 1st to 3rd century A.D. Height: 6 1/4" (16 cm). The head is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Some small chips and erosion, local restoration on top of head ("usnisa", see photos), otherwise good condition.

Large puppet head representing the head of Garuda, the mythical bird, the vehicle of Vishnu, also a hero of the Ramayana epic. Wood, with remnants of polychrome pigments. Eyes made of red glass. A rope is attached to the top of the head to allow the pulling of a wood tongue. Burma, 19th century. Height: 11 1/2" (29 cm) The head is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Very good condition.

Important incense burner ("boshanlu" in Chinese), of ovoid shape resting on a stemmed base. The censer is decorated on its lid with an openworl design representing mount Boshan of the Taoist paradise, or maybe the three legendary islands Penglai, Fangzhang and Yingzhou, together with several scenes of humans and animals either alone or opposed. Semi-circular pendant ("huang" in Chinese). Light green jade, with a calcified area at the upper part and on some other tiny areas, due to a prolonged stay underground. The piece is decorated with an archaic geometric design on the center part, ending on each side with a stylized dragon head. Realistic face mask, pierced through eyes wide open, fine nose, pierced through mouth open and showing teeth, small chin. Wood, with remnants of polychrome pigments. Africa, R.D. Congo, Yombe peoples. Height: 10 1/2" (26 cm). Large chip under chin, erosion all over, otherwise very good condition. A rather unusual piece.

Exquisite Buddhist symbol representing the Wheel of the Buddhist Law, surrounded by other Buddhist symbols on front and back, in an oval frame resting on a stylized double lotus tall base.
