The Japanese "sumi-tsubo", used to draw straight lines, has been used by carpenters, masons, and other construction workers for many centuries and is till used today. It is made of wood with one end containing a spool to hold a long length of strong string and the other end hollowed out into a shallow bowl to hold cotton saturated with "sumi", or black ink. Small amulet moulded in the shape of Tibetan God Kubera (or Vaisravana), seated on a lotus throne, holding a banner with his right hand and the mongoose (that spits jewels) with his left hand. Terracotta, lacquered and gilt in front and painted red at side and back. Tibet, 19th century. Height: 1 5/16" (3,3 cm). Good condition despite tiny chips in some areas. Large mask, with large forehead, eyebrows in relief, coffee-bean eyes, protruding triangular nose, mouth in relief, large chin. A coiffe is attached around the upper side of the rim; it is composed of feathers on top, surmounting a raffia and wood structure which is meant to cover the dancer's head. Below cheek level, a raffia beard is attached around the lower part of the rim.
