Anthropomorphic figure, with typically styled head and coiffe, a long neck and short, slightly bent legs resting on small feet. At mid level, a fabric pouch containing fetish material. Wood, with dark-brown semi-glossy patina, and stained and patinated fabric. The pouch had been opened at the back in what may have been an attempt at desacralizing the fetish figure, and thus part of its contents are gone. Africa, D.R. Congo (ex Zaire), Teke Peoples. Large wooden helmet mask, with stylized horns alongside the head, small ears, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, long triangular nose, mouth in relief. Realistic face mask, pierced through eyes wide open, fine nose, pierced through mouth open and showing teeth, small chin. Wood, with remnants of polychrome pigments. Africa, R.D. Congo, Yombe peoples. Height: 10 1/2" (26 cm). Large chip under chin, erosion all over, otherwise very good condition. A rather unusual piece.
