Large mask, with large forehead, eyebrows in relief, coffee-bean eyes, protruding triangular nose, mouth in relief, large chin. A coiffe is attached around the upper side of the rim; it is composed of feathers on top, surmounting a raffia and wood structure which is meant to cover the dancer's head. Below cheek level, a raffia beard is attached around the lower part of the rim. A black and white pigment decor is painted over the face, to represent war paint, or maybe stylized scarifications. ...click for details

Large "Ngil" mask, with crescent shaped pierced-through eyes, incised features and ritual scarifications. A large hole for attachment on each side at eye level. Wood, with remnants of white pigment (kaolin) in the recesses. Africa, Gabon, Fang Peoples. Height: 15" (38 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand that enhances its strange beauty. Very old mask, oval face surmounted by a flaring cylinder with geometric decor on top and lower side, crescent-like coiffe, relief eyebrows ending with a well defined thin nose, small ears, large protruding eyes, pierced through open mouth showing teeth, small chin, and a stylized beard. Large mask with protruding forehead, nose, eyes and mouth, rectangular holes at eyes and mouth and round holes at nose all pierced through. Large, irregular holes around face for attachment. Reliquary head of typical style. At the bottom side of the neck, the piece seems to have been torn away from what originally must have been the lid of the reliquary box. Wood, thick dark patina, oily on the face itself. A collection number is inscribed on the lower back of the neck. Africa, Gabon, Fang Peoples. Height: 9 1/2" (23cm). The piece is mounted on a custom wood stand. Good condition.
