Head of a "lohan" (or "arhat" in sanscript), his face reflecting a tense, almost suffering, expression. Wood, with traces of its original plastering and colouring, and of some polychrome pigments on the eyebrows and in the mouth. China, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), maybe earlier. Height: 12 1/4" (31 cm). The head is unmounted. Obvious signs of great age, otherwise very good condition.

Large statue of a female sitting on a stool, typical head with open mouth showing teeth, thick angular neck, large pointed breasts, protruding abdomen with scarifications, stylized feet. Wood coloured with dark and white (the latter kaolin) pigments. Africa, Nigeria, Idoma Peoples, mid 20th century. Height: 24 1/2" (62 cm). Finely carved head of a lohan, his very expressive face reflecting a tense meditation, with a "third eye" in the middle of his forehead. Wood, with fragments of plaster and traces of the original polychromy. China, early Ming Dynasty period (1368-1644), maybe earlier. Height: 11 1/2" (29 cm). The scene is carved under an architectural ceiling, and shows Maya, the Buddha's mother, standing and holding a tree branch with her right hand, the baby Buddha protruding from her right thigh and a bodhisattva catching the baby in his hands. Highly unusual fetish made from a hornbill, with a superbly carved relief decor of a battle around a temple or palace on the front, and a carved relief decor of a tiger on the beak. The back is closed with a reddish plaster, to allow the hornbill to contain magic material, thus the strong rattle noise when the piece is shaken. Face mask representing the smiling Tudi, or Tudigong, the God of the soil and of cereals, a main character in the traditional esoteric Nuo theater in China. Wood, with numerous layers of polychrome pigments. Very fine statue of male ibeji twin, with tall coiffe, eyes with white metal inserts, arms alongside torso, scarifications on abdomen, back and arms, very short legs, large feet resting on a rounded base.
