Sutra book lock, cast in the shape of a small rectangular relief showing at its center the Buddha, in "bumisparsa mudra", sitting on a lotus, with five tiny holes allowing the insertion of a semi-precious stone (probably coral) surrounding him. A pair of superbly carved face masks used for specific rituals among some minority ethnic groups in China. The one on the left represents the face of Tudi, or Tudigong, the god of the ground and of cereals, with a large smile showing his teeth, wearing a formal cap and sporting a moustache and a beard probably made of hemp. The mask on the right represents the face of Mrs Tudi, the goddess of the ground, with a subtle smile barely showing her teeth, wearing a diadem. Wood, with polychrome lacque ...click for details

Breastplate made of a large central shell surrounded by smaller shells on either side, the whole group attached to a textile narrow belt to the back of which numerous pairs of cauries are also attached. Papua New Guinea, Southern Highlands, early 20th century, maybe earlier. Length (belt): around 37" (92,5 cm). A few side shells maybe missing, otherwise very good condition. Ex. old European collection.

Statue of the God of the North, in formal robes, sitting on a throne, and surmounting his attributes, the tortoise and the snake, hidden in rocks. Opening at the back for votive texts or offerings, lid now gone. Gilt wood. China, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.). Height: 10 1/2" (26,7 cm). Small architectural ornament, carved in the shape of a Garuda, standing under a triangular platform with his wings open. Wood, fine dark patina. Nepal, 18th century, probably earlier. Height: 4 1/8" (10,5 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Old traces of woodworm work (no danger), large chip on right side of platform, otherwise good condition. Note: in Hindu religion, Garuda is a demigod, half man half eagle, who carries god Vishnu.

Vajra (or "dorje" in Tibetan language) with a central handle in the shape of a ball surrounded with two lotus decorations, and with five points grouped in four coming out of "makara" (water dragons) mouths, arranged around a pointed axis. Statue of a domestic god, in formal attire, sitting on a (now missing) throne or armchair. Wood, with traces of gilding. China, Qing Dynasty, 18th C. Height: 8 3/4" (22,3 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom wood stand. Both feet and right hand missing, erosion, otherwise good condition.
