Small belt hook, its main part with two holes meant to receive turquoise inlays (one of them still remaining), its short stem ending in a very finely cast dragon head also having a hole at each eye level to receive turquoise inlays (one of them still remaining). Large round knob at the back for attachment to a leather belt. Bronze, with partly encrusted red and green patina. China, Warring States Period (-475/-221). Height: 1 3/4" (4,5 cm). Very good condition.

Statue of crowned Buddha, in royal attire, his hands in "bhumisparsa mudra" (taking the Earth as a witness of the veracity of his sayings), sitting cross-legged on a tall throne. A hole at the top of the crown suggests the presence originally of a finial, now gone, while a hole at the back means that the statue was held firmly in a niche via a tenon. Statue of Buddha, wearing monk's robes, in a meditative posture, eyes closed, his face reflecting a profound inner serenity. Votive box at the back, lid missing. Wood, with traces of the original lacquering and gilding. The front of the statue, which was carved on a separate piece of wood, and which represented the hands, legs and feet of the statue, are now missing. Statue of Guan Yu, the Chinese God of War, in military garb, sitting on a throne, in a posture full of authority. Votive box at the back, lid missing. Wood, with remnants of the original gilding. China, 18th century, maybe earlier. Height: 13 1/4" (33,5 cm). Good condition.
NOTE: Guan Yu is a good example of a hero of the past who was deified in ancient China.
