Small relief representing the birth of Buddha. The scene is carved under an architectural ceiling, and shows Maya, the Buddha's mother, standing and holding a tree branch with her right hand, the baby Buddha protruding from her right thigh and a bodhisattva catching the baby in his hands. Small head of Buddha, its face reflecting a profound inner serenity. Stucco, with numerous soil encrustations. Pakistan, Gandhara Region, Graeco-Buddhist art, 1st to 3rd century A.D. Height: 6 1/4" (16 cm). The head is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Some small chips and erosion, local restoration on top of head ("usnisa", see photos), otherwise good condition.

Small relief fragment representing a bust of Buddha. Grey schist. Pakistan, Gandhara Region, graeco-buddhist art, 1st to 3rd century. Dimensions: height: 3 3/8" (8,5 cm), length: 4 1/4" (10,5 cm). The piece is mounted on a custom metal stand. Some erosion, otherwise very good condition. Note: on this relief, like on most reliefs in Gandhara art, Buddha is shown with a moustache, as the Indian tradition believes. A very moving little piece of religious art.

Relief fragment carved in the shape of a mythological guardian lion bust and forelegs, backed by a rectangular slab. Grey schist, with traces of soil encrustation. Graeco-buddhist art of the Gandhara Region, 2nd/3rd century A.D. Height: 7 1/2" (18,5 cm). The relief is affixed to a plexi stand with a coating of silicon glue at the back (can be peeled off if needed). Chip at forehead right side, left foreleg partly missing, otherwise good condition.
