Small plate representing Bhimsen, the legendary wrestler, the brother of the Pandavas from the Mahabarata. Bhimsen is shown here subduing a demon. Embossed brass, with nice green and red patina. Nepal, 17th century, maybe earlier. Dimensions: length: 4 3/4" (12 cm), height: 2 7/8" (7,5 cm). The plate is nicely mounted on a custom wood stand. Statue of a deified tamed demon, standing in an aggressive and threatening posture on a rounded rectangular base, bare chested, wearing a large cape and pants, holding an axe in his right hand. Statue of Kuan Ti, or Kuan Yu, the God of War, standing on a rounded base in an agressive posture, wearing military costume. His hands were probably holding a sword and a spear, now gone. Wood, with remnants of polychrome pigments. Tiny holes around the eyebrows, under the nose and over the chin were probably used to contain animal hair inserts to suggest real eyebrows, moustache and beard. Statue of Buddha Sakyamuni, in monk's robes, his hands in "bhumisparsa mudra" (posture showing Buddha taking the Earth as a witness of the veracity of his sayings), sitting cross-legged on a high lotus throne. Inscriptions at the back of the throne. Embossed silver encasing a resin core. Burma, 19th century. Height: 7" (18 cm). Slight dent at the lower part of the face, top of head partly missing, otherwise very good condition. A very fine piece. Ex. old French collection.

Statue of Guan Yu, the Chinese God of War, in military garb, sitting on a throne, in a posture full of authority. Votive box at the back, lid missing. Wood, with remnants of the original gilding. China, 18th century, maybe earlier. Height: 13 1/4" (33,5 cm). Good condition.
NOTE: Guan Yu is a good example of a hero of the past who was deified in ancient China.
