| Statue of Kuan Yin,the Chinese Goddess of Mercy, wearing a diadem (on which a tiny Amithaba Buddha is shown at the center) and formal robes, sitting cross-legged, in "abhaya and varada mudra" (hands posture of blessing, protection and charity). Bronze, with large remnants of the original gilding and polychrome colouring. Dark-green thick patina appears in areas where the gilding is eroded. China, Ming Dynasty (1368~1644 A.D.). Height: 7 7/8" (19,7cm). An old accident has provoked a slight dent in the lower part of the back of the statue (see photo), otherwise the piece is in good condition. Note: Goddess Kuan Yin is a specifically Chinese female impersonation of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara in the Buddhist pantheon. | |||||||||
