| Very old mask, oval face surmounted by a flaring cylinder with geometric decor on top and lower side, crescent-like coiffe, relief eyebrows ending with a well defined thin nose, small ears, large protruding eyes, pierced through open mouth showing teeth, small chin, and a stylized beard. Holes around upper part of rim. Deeply patinated wood, with traces of dark pigment in some areas. Africa, Ivory Coast, Guro Peoples, Early 20th Century. Among the Guro, this mask is called "gu", a feminine mask. Height: 14" (35 cm). Obvious signs of use and great age, large chip on upper part of rim, deep erosion in some areas, otherwise good condition. Ex. old French collection. A superb piece. | |||||||||
