| Large mask, with large forehead, eyebrows in relief, coffee-bean eyes, protruding triangular nose, mouth in relief, large chin. A coiffe is attached around the upper side of the rim; it is composed of feathers on top, surmounting a raffia and wood structure which is meant to cover the dancer's head. Below cheek level, a raffia beard is attached around the lower part of the rim. A black and white pigment decor is painted over the face, to represent war paint, or maybe stylized scarifications. A set of three irregular holes is pierced through the top of each cheek. Fine dark-brown patina. Africa, D.R. Congo (ex Zaire), Kuba Peoples. Height (mask only) 12" (30 cm). The mask is mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of use and age, some erosion, small chips, otherwise very good condition. | |||||||
