Edan, Ogboni Society, Yoruba Peoples
"Edan" in the shape of a statue representing a bearded male figurine, with obvious genitalia, wearing a large and adorned necklace, two ropes or chains holding sashes and a belt holding two cases resting on his left hip, sitting or squatting on a small circular base. Hole at upper back of head for attachment. Bronze, with iron rod beneath. Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba Peoples, 19th century. Edans were attributes worn by members of the Ogboni Society, an important and exclusive group having great influence among the Yoruba tribes. Height (including rod): 6 1/2" (16,6 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom wood stand that enhances its unusual beauty. Obvious signs of use, fine greenish patina with reddish areas (a sign of great age), heavy oxidization on iron rod. Excellent condition.
