| "Ngontang" helmet mask, hollowed out, of cylindrical shape, with four faces on the sides surmounted by a cross-like relief decor. Irregular large holes around the rim. Wood, with fine patina, black pigment all over and white pigment on the faces. Africa, Gabon, Fang Peoples. Early 20th century, maybe earlier. Height: 7 3/4" (20 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand that enhances its strange beauty. Obvious signs of use and great age, otherwise good condition. Note 1: such mask was worn during ceremonies linked to births or funerals. Note 2: the significance of the four faces is still unknown but, according to Fang tradition, white pigment is related to the world of the dead. | |||||||||
