| Divination implement, an abstract figure with open rectangular element on rounded base surmounted by a stylized head with carved facial features and backswept coiffure. Hole beneath, maybe for attachment to mount, now gone. Wood, with thick glossy dark-brown patina. Africa, R.D. Congo, Luba Pëoples. Height: 5 1/16" (13 cm). Obvious signs of use and great age, otherwise good condition. A rather rare piece. The divination implement is sold together with a book, "Luba Art and The Making of History" by Mary Nooter Roberts and Allen F. Roberts, published by The Museum of African Art, New York and Prestel in Munich in 1996. It is a superbly illustrated book of 257 pages that covers all aspects of Luba Peoples life, art and rituals, including the divination rituals, in excellent condition. | ||||||||
