| Face mask carved in the shape of a smiling face wearing an official cap. Wood, with numerous superimposed layers of polychrome pigments. Remnants of a Chinese character on top of the cap. A series of tiny holes under the cheeks and on the chin suggest the former existence of a moustache and a beard, probably some animal hair. China, early 19th century, maybe older. Height: 9" (23 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of use and great age, small crack on top of hat, old insect infestation (no danger and no damage), otherwise very good condition. Note: this mask is most probably representing Tudigong, the God of the Soil and of Cereals. Coming from an ancient tradition, it was used with other masks during village festivals, to incite local gods to protect or improve villagers life (good crops, etc...). | ||||||||||||
