| Large helmet mask with a concave heart-shaped smiling face carved on each side, surmounted by a short cylindrical coiffe. Wood, with fine dark-brown glossy patina, and remnants of kaolin on each face. Tiny holes drilled around the lower rim for attachment to a costume. Africa, Gabon, Fang Peoples. Height: 12 1/2" (31,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom wood stand. Obvious signs of use and age, lower rim eroded, large and old local withe-like restoration with a rattan tie, otherwise good condition. Note: to this day, it is still difficult to link such masks to a specific ritual. However, white pigment is a reference to the Afterworld in Fang Peoples tradition. | ||||||||||||||
