Important Mask, Bambara Peoples, 19th Century
Very old face mask, of oval shape, its forehead surmounted by a tiny female figure and decorated with protruding scarifications, small ears, pierced through slit eyes, long and thin nose, tiny mouth in relief, receding chin. Wood, with dark-brown semi-glossy patina. Africa, Mali, Bambara Peoples, 19th century. Height: around 13 1/2" (around 33 cm). The mask is mounted on a custom wood stand. Deep erosion all over, age cracks on forehead and below right eye, old local restoration along left side, chips, otherwise good condition. Ex. old French collection.
