| Sutra book lock, cast in the shape of a small rectangular relief showing at its center the Buddha sitting in "bumisparsa mudra" beside a stupa, the whole scene framed and flanked by a standing lion on both sides. Square opening on top and bottom for attachment. Bronze, with fine green and red patina. Tibet, 17th century. Height: 1 7/8" (4,8 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom wood stand. Very good condition despite overall erosion due to use and great age. Note: such implement was used to lock the straps that kept a sutra book (a book containing Buddhist texts) closed. | |||||||
