| Sutra book lock, cast in the shape of a small rectangular relief showing at its center the Buddha, in "bumisparsa mudra", sitting on a lotus, with five tiny holes allowing the insertion of a semi-precious stone (probably coral) surrounding him. The whole relief is framed and flanked by a vertical geometric decor on each side. Square opening on top and bottom for attachment. Bronze, with fine reddish-green patina. Tibet, 17th century. Height: 1 7/8" (4,8 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom wood stand. Very good condition despite overall erosion due to use and great age. Note: such implement was used to lock the straps that kept a sutra book (a book containing Buddhist texts) closed. | ||||||
