| Statue of the God of the North, in formal robes, sitting on a throne, and surmounting his attributes, the tortoise and the snake, hidden in rocks. Opening at the back for votive texts or offerings, lid now gone. Gilt wood. China, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.). Height: 10 1/2" (26,7 cm). Gilding flaked in some areas, traces of soot all over due to close exposure to temple candles smoke, nose chipped, otherwise good condition. Note: The God of the North, or Northern Emperor, is an important and well-known deity in the Chinese ancient traditional pantheon. He is one of the most powerful ministers of the Jade Emperor who is the Supreme Ruler of the Heavens, of the Underworld and the Protector of Humanity. | |||||||||
