| Vajra (or "dorje" in Tibetan language) with a central handle in the shape of a ball surrounded with two lotus decorations, and with five points grouped in four coming out of "makara" (water dragons) mouths, arranged around a pointed axis. These five points symbolize the five elements, the five Jinas and the five sorts of wisdom. Bronze, with fine dark-green patina in the recesses. The piece was cast in Tibet in the 18th century. Length: 4 5/8" (11,7 cm). Obvious signs of age and use, erosion in some areas (e.g. handling part), otherwise very good condition. Note 1: vajras, or thunderbolt sceptres, were mainly employed by Tantric Buddhism in Tibet, and the Chinese and Japanese esoteric sects, and were used in Vedic ritual to dispel evil forces from the sacrificial enclosure. They hence came to symbolize spiritual forces and firmness of spirit. Note 2: it is interesting to compare the shape of this type of vajra with that of the one shown in # 1-0015 in our catalogue. | |||||||
