Theater Mask of an Ancient God, China, 18th C.
Theater mask representing the face of a Kaishan, "the god who opens the mountain", with small horns, protruding forehead, relief eyebrows, bulging eyes, big nose, cheeks in relief, open mouth showing tongue and fangs, protruding chin. Wood, with traces of polychrome pigments. China, 18th century, probably earlier. Height: 9 1/4" (23,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Erosion all over, old repairs inside at eyes and nose level, otherwise good condition. Note: God Kaishan belongs to one of the most ancient Chinese mythologies, and was revered by ethnic groups, living in mountainous regions, seeking protection against evil.
