| Face mask carved in the shape of a smiling face wearing an official cap. This mask represents the face of Tudi, or Tudigong, the God of the Soil and of Cereals. Wood, with numerous superimposed layers of polychrome pigments. Chinese character on top of cap ("happiness"). Strands of animal hair were affixed into tiny holes under the cheeks and the chin, to suggest a moustache and a beard. China, 18th century. Height: 10 1/8" (25,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of use and great age, old restoration alongside the left side, otherwise good condition. NOTE: such mask was used during village festivals to incite local gods to protect or improve villagers life (good crops, etc...). | |||||||||||||
