| Small face mask nicely carved in the shape of a smiling face wearing an official cap. This mask represents the face of Tudi, or Tudigong, the ancient God of the Soil and of Cereals. Wood, with polychrome pigments. Long strands of hemp were affixed with wood pegs into tiny holes under the cheeks and the chin, to suggest a moustache and a beard. China, 19th century. Height: 8 1/4" (20,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of use and age, otherwise very good condition. Note: such mask was used during village festivals to incite local gods to protect or improve villagers life (good crops, etc...). | |||||||||||
