| Face mask representing the serene face of Xianfeng Xiaojie, her hair arranged in a bun, fine nose, half-smiling eyes and mouth. Wood, with several layers of lacquer. China, early 19th century. Height: 9 1/2" (24,cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Good condition despite obvious signs of age and extended use (lacquer flaked in numerous areas). NOTE: Xianfeng Xiaojie is a legendary "Chinese Joan of Arc" who liberated her region from thugs. Her character is played in village festivals, during which her mask is worn by dancers, together with the ones of other characters of the traditional "nuo" ritual theater. | |||||||||||
