| Face mask elaborately carved representing the face of Tudi, or Tudigong, the God of the Soil and of Cereals. Wood, with dark-red and black lacquering. Strands of hemp are affixed with wood pegs into tiny holes under the cheeks and the chin, to suggest a moustache and a beard. China, 19th century, maybe earlier. Height: 9" (22,5 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Obvious signs of use and age, otherwise very good condition. NOTE: Tudigong belongs to ancient Chinese mythology. His mask, together with others, was used by dancers during village festivals to incite Tudi and other domestic gods to protect or improve villagers life (good crops, etc...). | ||||||||||||
