| Superbly carved mask representing God Kailu, with a fierce expression, two small horns and a central one, pierced through bulging eyes, large ears and nose, open mouth showing teeth, fangs and tongue. Wood, with traces of superimposed polychrome pigments. China, early 19th century, probably earlier. Height: 10 3/4" (27 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Erosion all over, a few chips, otherwise very good condition. Note: God Kailu, "the god who opens the road, or the five roads", belongs to an ancient Chinese mythology, and was revered mostly by peoples living in South East China. His mask was worn by actors/dancers during "Nuo" theater shows in village festivals. | ||||||||||||
