| Pair of statues of "lohans" (disciples of Buddha), an aged one and a younger one, in monk's robes, kneeling, their hands in praying posture, their faces reflecting a profound inner serenity. Lacquered and gilt wood. China, 18th century, probably earlier. Height: 16 1/4" (41 cm). Obvious signs of great age, lacquering and gilding flaked in some areas, otherwise very good condition. NOTE: these two statues are representations of Ananda (the youngest one) and Kasyapa, (the oldest one), the closest companions of Buddha, and perpetuators of his teachings. | |||||||||||||||
