| Scabbard buckle ("wei" in Chinese). Dark-green ("spinach colour") jade, with an important calcification at the upper area due a prolonged stay underground. The piece is decorated with an archaic geometric decor carved in relief, ending in a stylized tiger head at the lower part. There are traces of a rusty colouring in tiny areas in the calcified part, suggesting a former contact with what may have been a blade in the grave where it was buried. China, Han Dynasty Period (206 BC-220 AD). Dimensions: 3 5/8" (92 mm), width: 1 1/16" (21 mm), Very good condition. Ex; old French collection. A very interesting piece. NOTE: such scabbard buckle was originally conceived during the Zhou Dynasty (-770-475), a period during which iron spades and weapons started to be made. It was used to attach the scabbard to the belt. | |||||||||||||||
