Important Statue of Bodhisattva, China, Ca. 14th C.
Statue of a bodhisattva, in "lalitasana" (sitting at ease, a posture of relaxation), his face reflecting a profound inner serenity. The statue was probably made of several parts. The right arm was carved separately, and is thus attached to the statue with a tenon. Wood, with traces of polychrome pigments. China, early Ming Dynasty period (circa 14th century). Dimensions: length: 23" (57 cm), height: 23 1/2" (59 cm). Obvious signs of great age, several chips, erosion, some old but minor restorations, otherwise very good condition.
