Antique Mask of the Nuo Theater, China
Face mask representing the smiling Tudi, or Tudigong, the God of the soil and of cereals, a main character in the traditional esoteric Nuo theater in China. Wood, with numerous layers of polychrome pigments. Holes were pierced through under the nose and around the chin to allow the insertion of small wood pegs to affix animal hair representing the moustache and beard, now partly gone. China, early 19th century, probably even earlier. Height: 10" (25 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand. Numerous old local restorations on the left side and around the chin, otherwise good condition.
