Plate of circular form, with a detailed decoration in relief depicting Buddha, surrounded by his disciples, facing an elephant which bears a stupa on its back, the whole scene surmounting a relief design representing flower petals. Bronze, with fine slightly encrusted patina. Gandhara, ca. 3rd century. Diameter: 13.9 cm. The plate is nicely mounted on a custom stand. Very good condition. NOTE: this object may have been used as a cosmetic plate, though most Gandharan cosmetic plates were made of stone.
